Athletics

Landon Upper school footballer, motivating other teams members, on the field of play with other players

Athletics at Landon are “co-curricular,” which means that every student across the entire school is required to participate in a sport (varsity, club or intramural) each season. We offer 22 athletics options in the Upper School: 20 interscholastic sports (some of which have varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams), winter intramurals, and midday fitness and after-school strength and conditioning classes that teach the keys to physical fitness. All freshmen are required to play an interscholastic sport for the fall season, but may participate in intramurals (field/gym games) or strength and conditioning at any time in their Upper School career after that. A list of sports options by season is below.

ACHIEVEMENT

Landon School athletics accomplishments

In the Upper School, we have a storied history of athletics success. Our varsity teams have brought home 198 Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC) championships, and our athletes often go on to compete at the collegiate level — we have had more than 160 boys play NCAA athletics over the past decade, including 18 members of the Class of 2019. Our alumni return often to share their experiences of what it is like to be a student-athlete in college.

Facilities

Landon School athletics facilities

Landon has a 75-acre campus with state-of-the-art facilities, such as our Barton Alumni Athletic Center, which includes two gymnasiums, a wrestling room, and a strength and conditioning area that our students say is one of the best in the area. Outside, we have a turf field with a track, four grass fields, 10 outdoor tennis courts, two baseball fields, a 3.1-mile cross country course, and an outdoor swimming pool. Our 13-time IAC champion and four-time Mid-Atlantic Prep state champion ice hockey team skates at the Bears’ Den at Rockville Ice Arena.

Teacher-Coach-Mentor

Key to our athletics accomplishments are our teacher-coach-mentors. The same men and women who educate you in the classroom and advise you outside of it also coach you on the field, in the pool and on the court — they get to know you and connect with you on multiple levels so that they know where you shine and where you can improve.

Sports Medicine

Landon employs two full-time certified athletic trainers who help manage the overall health and wellness of our student-athletes. In addition, two certified strength-and-conditioning coaches help boys get physically fit and teach them how to be safe in all their athletic endeavors.
