Upper School Students Participate in Habitat for Humanity

First Week of Summer Dedicated to Service

From June 11 through June 15, 16 Landon boys chose to spend their first week of summer vacation working for Habitat for Humanity. This is an annual trip that science teacher Bob Oetting organizes every year for rising juniors and seniors. This year there was even a waiting list to participate.

The students and chaperones worked at a variety of sites in Easton and Cambridge, Maryland, pitching in to help on projects such as putting in a lawn and shrubs, laying a concrete sidewalk, installing a French drain in a new foundation and moving scaffolding from a job site to storage. A new project for the Landon group and Habitat was preparing for the planting of aquatic plants in a natural run-off filter, part of Habitat-Choptanks green construction plan.

Landon teachers Ardis Danon, Ehren Federowitcz, Ted Ogden and David Smith, along with parent Scott Kelso served as chaperones at various times during the trip.

This is the second Habitat trip with Landon participants this year. Three Landon seniors, together with five girls from Holton-Arms, spent a week participating in Habitat for their Independent Senior Projects in May. Though Landon crews in the past have always worked on building projects, this crew did a lot of demolition and sorting through materials for Habitiat’s ReStore. Oetting along with Sam Lamson’12 and Eric Jordan ’12 were featured in a photo about Habitat’s ReStore in The Star Democrat, a local paper in Easton, Maryland. Click here to read the article.
