Ten Participate in Six-Week Program
Ten boys from the Washington, D.C. area are participating in Landon’s Extra Step program. Extra Step is a six-week program for middle-school-aged boys that has been offered at no cost to participants for the past 18 years.
The participants are developing the academic skills necessary for success at top independent schools. The purpose of the program is to improve each student’s academic performance so that he can be admitted to and succeed at an independent school. Over the years, some of the program participants have attended Landon, while others have gone to other area independent schools.
Third Grade Teacher Vanessa Burchett is director of Extra Step. Now in her sixth year with the program, she says, “The Extra Step staff uses this summer opportunity to increase potential for academic success. The boys learn, practice and master a core curriculum.”
Landon student Bernard Akinboyewa ’14 is assisting with the program.
