Winter Season:
All swimmers, divers, and water polo players are encouraged to participate in the swimming season. Practices are held at Holton arms natatorium Monday through Friday. The Landon Men’ Swimming and Diving program began in 1979 under the direction of Lower School Headmaster Marcos Williams and continues today as one of the best swimming and diving programs in the Metro Washington region. Landon has been blessed with a number of top aquatic athletes over its 30 years of excellence. John Paul Norvell, Chris Dufek, Brock Park, Adam McDonald, and many others have gone on to compete at some of the nation’s most competitive collegiate programs. Landon is a proud member of the Washington Metropolitan Private Schools Swimming and Diving League, which has a membership of well over thirty independent schools. As a capstone swimming and diving event, Landon also participates in Metro’s Swimming and Diving Championships, where more than seventy-five schools are in attendance. Practices are geared to anaerobic threshold, VO I & II Max, Aerobic I & II, Core strength dry land, and stroke refinement. Swimmers , divers, and Water Polo players are also encouraged to be in the water as much as possible. Club teams in the area are: Curl Burke, Sea Devil Swimming, RMSC, Montgomery Dive Club, and Machine Aquatics.
Summer training:
Summer training begins the second week of June in the Dixon Pool, Landon’s outdoor swimming facility. Practices are Monday through Friday from 6:30 – 8:30am. Practices concentrate on staying in swimming shape, while focusing on water polo fundamentals like, hand strength, throwing, passing, hand to hand wrestling, leg endurance, and cardiovascular systems. Game rules coverage and scrimmages take place daily. Athletes are encouraged to play for USA Water Polo Club’s in the area and attend one of the nation’s top camps at the United States Naval Academy. Water Polo club teams in the area are: Claude Moore Aquatic Club, Rockville Water Polo, NOVA Water Polo, and Naval Academy Aquatic Club.
Fall Season
The Upper School Water Polo program enters its fourth year as one of the new sports offered to students during the fall season. Twenty-five young men, from ninth to twelfth grades, begin training in June in our own regulation outdoor pool. As the fall weather approaches, the boys head inside to warmer temperatures at Holton Arms, Landon’s sister school. All students experience a diverse and rigorous training schedule. Landon is a member of the Mid Atlantic Water Polo League. League championships take place at the end of October. Landon also participates in the Eastern Prep School Championships, recently hosted by Landon.
