As his Eagle Scout project, Landon rising junior Randy Staples ’14 organized a book drive, partnering with Arcola Elementary School in Silver Spring, for children who had less access to books.
The drive collected nearly 2,000 books from April 16 and May 27. Staples received donations from Landon’s Lower, Middle and Upper Schools, as part of several end-of-year book drives at Landon. Books were also donated by First Book, Daedelus Books, family, friends and his own bookshelf, according to the Gazette.
According to the Gazette, Arcola has more than 80 percent of its students on free and reduced lunch, and close to half of the students from homes with English as the second language. Staples and 15 other scouts cleaned and organized a room in the school in preparation for the books, according to the Gazette.
