Posted 07/15/2010 10:05AM

Landon Basketball Captain Was First Round Pro Pick

Fred Hetzel ’61, a co-captain of the 1961 basketball team that went 17-1 and the first pick in the 1965 NBA draft, has been inducted into the Southern Conference Hall of Fame. A 6’8” All-Met and All-I.A.C. player at Landon, Hetzel played for Davidson College, where he won three Southern Conference Player of the Year awards.

In 1965, Hetzel was drafted first among all eligible players by the San Francisco Warriors (now the Golden State Warriors) and played six years in the NBA. After retiring from professional basketball, he went on to a successful career in real estate and now lives in Northern Virginia and Florida.

The SoCon Hall of Fame was established in 2009 and is based in Spartansburg, South Carolina. Other recent inductees include Arnold Palmer, Dick Groat, Sam Huff and Jerry West.
