Lower School Admissions

We invite you to get to know Landon’s Lower School and to begin the application process for the 2013-14 school year.
At Landon, every Lower School student is:
- Challenged academically. Small classes and the individual attention they afford are key to achievement at this age in a boy’s development. Even boys in third grade move about the campus for specials in art and science. At the fourth and fifth grade levels, teachers specialize in their subject and boys have the benefit of faculty expertise in writing, reading, math and social studies. All boys are required to participate in a performance group. Learn more about academics at Landon.
- Taught by talented and caring men and women who teach, coach and mentor. Our dedicated faculty choose to teach Lower School boys, and they understand how to channel their energy and enthusiasm. Learning takes place in the classroom, the art studio and the gymnasium, and all teachers come to know each boy as an individual with his own unique talents and interests. Meet some Lower School faculty.
- Involved in a breadth of activities. All Lower School students participate in a daily physical education class intended to build fitness and teach specific skills. In fifth grade, boys may compete on interscholastic teams, where we stress sportsmanship and skills development. A highlight each year for the younger boys is the competition for the Shrimp Bowl (football) and the Landon Cup (soccer). The annual spring play engages almost every boy on the stage or behind the scenes. Lower School students also find time to serve others, with projects like “Pennies for Parents” and the fall Walk for the Homeless. Learn more about athletics, the arts, and community service.
- Engaged in a community that lives by a Code of Character. Boys learn to live by the Lower School motto: “Be honest, do your best, and help the other fellow.” Members of the Student Council and our Prefects visit Lower School to help boys understand the two fundamental principles — respect and honesty — which guide our actions. The school is committed to supporting diversity; 28 percent of boys are students of color. Read about Character Education at Landon.
- Given the opportunity to learn in the broader community. Each Lower School student participates in a grade-specific activity that takes them off campus for experiential learning. Fifth grade students have an overnight trip, while other boys visit historic sites, meet authors who visit local bookstores and occasionally just head out just to go bowling with friends.
- Part of a brotherhood of Landon Bears who will support him in Lower School and beyond. In addition to the friendships that develop on a daily basis, boys are members of school-wide Bear Teams, made up of students from each grade, who participate in games twice a year. Upper Schoolers visit classrooms as tutors and mentors.
