Landon Takes 1st at Musselman Invitational
Posted 08/31/2010 03:19PM By Thomas Dresher Martinsburg, WV Landon cross country kicked off its 2010 campaign in thrilling fashion Saturday with a first place finish at the Musselman Invitational. Five varsity runners earned medals as the Bears hammered out an 11-point victory over their Applemen hosts. Speedy newcomer Mac Hightower ’12 blazed his way to an impressive fourth place finish; Captain Ryan “Dog” Dougherty ’11, hot on Hightower’s heels for the entire race, earned fifth place honors. The ever-swift Adam Brill ’13 placed seventh, and Billy Kuhn and Henry Duncan, both ’12, finished in the eighth and ninth positions; all three Bears battled through a tough second mile together and slipped past Hedgesville and Musselman runners to help secure Landon’s first-place finish. Speedy veteran Brian Liu ’12 earned 19th place honors, and wily Captain Jack Falvey ’11 finished 23rd overall. In JV action, Josh Michael and Harrison Voslow, both ’13, stole the show with identical times and first and second place finishes, respectively. Sam Lynch ’14 earned top-ten honors in the first cross country race of his career; fellow rookie Thomas Dunigan ’14 (12th place) was not far behind, and Carter O’Brien ’13, Rohit Jha ’13, Mark Perry ’13, and Will Christner ’12 all finished with impressive personal times on a grueling course. The Bears return to action Tuesday versus St. Mary’s Ryken before traveling to Clear Spring next Saturday for the Interstate Classic. Water Polo Earns Varsity Status
Posted 08/24/2010 03:04PM Fall Sport Now in its Fourth Year After three years as a club sport, Water Polo at Landon has been promoted to a varsity sport. A committee of Athletic Department staff, coaches, faculty members and trustees made the decision after reviewing the team’s request for a status change, looking at seven criteria, including other available teams in the area, boys’ interest and longevity potential.
“The boys have worked extremely hard and are really happy,” says Water Polo Head Coach Walt Bartman. The team has always practiced and played as hard as any other varsity sport, according to Acting Athletic Director Michael Derwinski. Now, as varsity athletes, the boys will earn varsity letters for their participation in Water Polo. With their first scrimmage only days away, the 35 members of the varsity and JV teams are already in the Dixon Pool on campus practicing with Bartman, JV Head Coach Jamie Matthews ’04 and JV Assistant Head Coach John Rayburn ’02. Bartman says he is excited for this season with an exceptional group of returning upperclassmen and lots of talented freshman joining the team. During the colder weather, the team will practice at the pool at Landon’s sister school, Holton-Arms, on River Road.
