You are a Bear.

You are a fierce competitor fully supported by a community of brothers.

At Landon, we require physical activity because boys require it to focus and excel. Throughout their academic career, each student-athlete will participate in individual or team sports, whether intramurals or interscholastic competition up through the varsity level.

Our teacher-coach-mentors, expertly hone athletic ability, strengthen physical and mental lifelong health, and mentor each boy’s development as a competitor and a young man of character.

Landon’s extensive championships and titles are a product of the determination and perseverance of every Bear, and his dedication to himself, his sport, and his teammates.

The foundation of Landon athletics is our philosophy that health and fitness are crucial to a boy's holistic wellness and academic success.

A Bear's development

Whether Bears aim for elite collegiate athletics or lifetime recreation, Landon athletics supports all aspects of a boy’s development—instilling the values of commitment and hard work, as well as delivering the satisfaction of individual and team accomplishment.

The athletic program holds sportsmanship, personal accountability, cooperation, and leadership as pillars, and seeks to prepare every Bear to face adversity and overcome challenges.

Tyler Perkins, a 10-year Bear, will play basketball for the University of Pennsylvania, was chosen as a First Team All-Met by The Washington Post, and was named the co-MVP of the Capital Classic.

Our program has a place for every boy.

Athletics at Landon are cocurricular, which means every student in every grade participates.  In the Lower School (Grades 3-6), Bears rotate through six sports, learning rules and building skills to find success. In the Middle (Grades 7-8) and Upper Schools (Grades 9-12), Bears choose a sport in all three seasons. Our program offers opportunities in interscholastic, club, and intramural sports.

Student Achievements

Students raise trophy after winning soccer title

Bear pride is rooted in a legacy of athletic achievement.

Since winning its first Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC) title in 1939, Landon has won at least one IAC title every year except three. Our teams who compete outside the IAC also win regional titles regularly. This winning tradition comes from an unrivaled combination of dedicated student-athletes, experienced coaches, and exceptional facilities. Our soccer, hockey, wrestling, golf, and rugby teams won titles in the 2022-23 school year.

Accomplished Coaches

Coach talks to players

Teacher-Coach-Mentor

In most cases, the same men and women who challenge and advise boys in Landon’s rigorous curriculum also inspire and coach boys to reach their athletic potential.

These teacher-coach-mentor relationships form strong bonds of mutual trust and respect—essential for boys to reach their highest level of academic and athletic achievement. The emphasis on relationships attracts talented and committed men and women who choose Landon because they want to make a difference in boys’ lives. These exceptional individuals treat this responsibility with the seriousness, commitment, and energy it deserves.

Two full-time certified athletic trainers manage the overall health and wellness of our student-athletes, while two certified strength and conditioning coaches teach boys how to safely increase their physical fitness.

Relationships are at the very core of our community at Landon. As teacher-coach-mentors, we learn what makes our students tick and where they need support. This approach allows us to challenge the boys to reach their potential in the classroom, on the stage, and on the fields. - will mcgettigan, Upper School History teacher and head varsity lacrosse coach
