Curriculum

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are both organic and intentional parts of curriculum planning and development across various departments.

From math textbooks organically integrating diverse cultures to teacher training in implicit bias, Landon is committed to integrating different cultures and perspectives into our curriculum, enriching students' educational experiences and fostering a global understanding. Students can see themselves in the curriculum across many departments, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and representation.

Resources and materials are made accessible to all students, and varied teaching methods are employed to meet diverse learning needs.

Valuing Differences

Respect is a core value of a Landon School education.

And respecting others means respecting and celebrating their different journeys, backgrounds, and identities. We seek to develop in our students the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to value differences, encouraging both speaking and acting with integrity and compassion and developing an informed and respectful worldview.

Another core value is inclusivity, which the Landon Character Pledge defines as “fully appreciating the need of everyone in our community to fully experience a sense of belonging and working proactively to further that goal. This includes affirmatively valuing diversity and individual differences.”

This work is affirmed by the Board of Trustees Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. This standing committee meets regularly throughout the school year to support, oversee, promote, and regularly track the effectiveness of the DEI strategies and associated initiatives at Landon.

Within our diverse community, students share common experiences that help promote the bonds of brotherhood as well as an understanding of their shared humanity.

Cultural Celebrations

Round table discussions, school assemblies, and cultural celebrations include Lunar New Year and events to honor Black History Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and Hispanic Heritage Month. Students are at the center of this work, as they share their own stories and are presenters at these events. After all-school assemblies, Lower and Middle School students have dedicated time to reflect and discuss what they learned.

Ethics and Community

Weekly Ethics and Community time is built into the Upper and Middle School schedules. Ethics speeches in the Upper and Middle schools are focused on the month’s core value and may sometimes touch upon the presenter’s race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender identity, sexual orientation, and religion in age-appropriate ways. Following the speech, students have time to reflect and discuss during the Advisory period.

Student Clubs

Landon’s robust student club program offers many opportunities for students to discuss differences and topics that are important to them. Among the over 45 clubs are ones representing a multitude of identity-related topics such as religion, gender, race, ethnicity, and other areas of student interest. Each year, Upper School student leaders participate in Landon’s Leadership Summit, which includes a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Identity Projects

Upper School Foundations classes include a “For My Brother” project to research and discuss students’ ethnic and religious backgrounds and traditions, as well as the importance of respecting all people. In the Middle School “I Am and I Believe” project, students write about who they are as a person, whether it is through how they identify themselves, their race, or their ethnicity, and how that affects their beliefs in regard to Landon’s core values.

Field Trips and Conferences

Upper and Middle School students learn about diverse identities and histories through field trips to sites such as the Holocaust Museum or through explorations such as the African American experience in the DMV for the Senior Capstone. Students also represent Landon at local and national conferences.
