Baseball at Landon is all about perseverance, respect, and teamwork.

These three values are essential to our program:

Perseverance is what helps our team overcome adversity. In baseball, we face unexpected injuries, setbacks, and moments when we’re not at full strength. Instead of making excuses, we find a way to push forward, adapt, and keep competing until the final out;
Respect is one of the most important values we can have. We show respect for ourselves, our teammates, our coaches, and our opponents. Our character can be tested most during a rivalry game or the biggest moment of the season. Respect reflects the lessons we’ve learned at home, in school, and throughout our program, and it defines who we are both on and off the field;
Teamwork is the foundation of everything we do. We hold each other accountable through both the good times and the bad. We support one another during difficult situations, celebrate each other’s successes, and always make sure no teammate has to face challenges alone.

We expect our student-athletes to live by the core values and honor code that define both our baseball program and our school community. Our expectation is that every player contributes to a culture built on integrity, accountability, and selflessness.

We strive to build a team that functions as a family - one where players form strong bonds, prioritize their teammates, and are always there for their brothers on and off the field. Success is measured not only by wins and losses, but by the character our athletes display, the relationships they build, and the standard they uphold every day.

Our student-athletes can expect to be treated with fairness and honesty. Whether they are starters, role players, or players focusing on developing skills, all athletes in the baseball program will have the opportunity to earn their place through hard work, discipline, and commitment.

Players can also expect to be challenged to become the best version of themselves not only as baseball players, but as young men. Our program is built on accountability, high standards, and a family atmosphere where every player is valued, supported, and given the opportunity to grow both on and off the field. After being part of the baseball program at Landon, athletes can expect to build character and to hold their brothers accountable.

Unique to our program is that we know how to win and stay competitive year after year with our own talent. We have found that Landon students are intrinsically motivated to develop their skills and contribute to their teams, and we see this in action on the baseball field. We also do a good job of attracting players who want to buy into our program and our school. Moreover, Landon does not pressure its players to be single-sport athletes but rather encourages them be their whole selves.

Program Leadership

Head Coach Henry Martinez has been teaching and coaching at Landon since 2023 and has been the varsity head coach since his arrival.

Prior to Landon, Coach Martinez served as JV head coach for four seasons, and then varsity head coach, for four seasons, at Jackson Reed High School. A lifelong resident of the D.C. area, he was team captain of then-Wilson High School’s baseball team and was named Wilson Invitational tournament MVP. His team was also three-time City Champion, as well as three-time state runner-up. Coach Martinez was named a Pigskin Club of Washington, D.C. Coach of the Year in 2023. In addition to his baseball responsibilities, Coach Martinez serves as Assistant Dean of Students and Upper School DEI Coordinator and coaches Middle School strength & conditioning.

Accomplishments

In the past three seasons, our program has secured 50 wins, largely thanks to the mentorship of our older players.

Graduates of our program go on to such colleges and universities as Bates College, Denison University, Dickinson College, Bard College, Kenyon College, Rensselaer Institute of Technology, Middlebury College, Towson University, University of Missouri, University of Southern California, and University of Virginia, among others.
