There is a long and distinguished history of lacrosse excellence at Landon.

The success of the program is grounded in Landon’s core values, particularly humility, respect, and teamwork. We are focused on building on habits within our control, like effort, enthusiasm, preparation, accountability, and sportsmanship. We want our athletes to be humble and maintain a growth mindset. We also expect them to hold themselves and their teammates accountable.

We expect our student athletes to get better each day and focus on the three pillars of our program:

Program Overview

Our Varsity Program

Athletes will be surrounded by teacher-coach-mentors that care about their success on and off the field and want them to reach their potential as young men. Combined, there are several decades of varsity coaching experience. We are not only in the classroom with the boys, but also in advisory, lunchroom, and hallways.

We take pride in developing our players. We prioritize getting better, more so than just playing games. They will be coached hard. We have high standards and are unwavering in our commitment to getting the boys better each day we are together. The team is very close knit - they will work hard as a unit on the practice field and spend time away from campus taking it easy, grabbing meals together, and becoming close friends.

We believe in multi-sport athletes. We believe playing multiple sports helps athletes develop as lacrosse players, but more importantly as well-rounded young men.

Student-athletes playing lacrosse in Upper School understand the true meaning of hard work and dedication through time spent on and off the field.

We commit to the weight room and agility work year around, including in-season, helping student-athletes become bigger, faster, and stronger.
Each player will get lots of touches on the ball, strengthening their lacrosse skillset.
On and off-ball principles are emphasized daily to build IQ. We also use film to reinforce concepts, gameplans, etc.
Practices are planned down to the minute. No time is wasted. Players aren't standing around. Each facet of the game is covered and repped to ensure we are well-prepared for our opponents.
Off the field, young men learn the importance of pushing through when things are hard, asking for help when they need it, holding themselves and others accountable, advocating for themselves, communicating clearly with peers and adults.

Program Leadership

Head Coach Will McGettigan has been teaching and coaching at Landon since 2014.

He became head coach in 2022 after supporting the team as a varsity assistant coach under both Rob Bordley and Ian Healy, including managing the substitution box, leading the extra man offense, and coaching as offensive coordinator. Prior to arriving at Landon, Coach McGettigan served as the head coach at Marin Catholic High School, where, during his four years at the helm, the lacrosse team won a league title and a Northern California Section Championship, a first in school history. As a senior at Brown University in 2006, Coach McGettigan served as a team captain, was the recipient of the team’s offensive MVP, and garnered Academic All-Ivy League honors. In addition to his lacrosse responsibilities, Coach McGettigan teaches Upper School history and coaches JV football.

Associate Head Coach J.R. Bordley has been teaching and coaching at Landon since 2007.

He became Associate Head Coach of Varsity Lacrosse in 2019 after supporting the team as an assistant coach for 12 years, working primarily with goalies and attack personnel. In addition to coaching, Coach Bordley has supported the lacrosse program by guiding student-athletes through the college process since 2012 in addition to admissions work, alumni outreach, scheduling, and managing the team’s social media. A decorated athlete himself, J.R. was an All American and Team MVP at Landon and an All-ACC selection and ACC champion at the University of Maryland in 2004. In addition to his varsity responsibilities, J.R. also coaches Middle School lacrosse.

Accomplishments

The vast majority of our graduating seniors play college lacrosse.

In 2026 alone, we have had the following:

Two National Champions. Caden Southworth '25, Princeton. Davis Owens '24, Tufts.
USA Lacrosse First Team All American. Cullen Brown '22, Ohio State.
USILA and NESCAC Defenseman of the Year. Nico Schermer '23, Bowdoin.
2nd Round PLL Pick. Cullen Brown '22, Redwoods.
All Ivy League, 2nd team. Will Cohen '23, Dartmouth
All Big East, 2nd team. Kevin Miller '24, Georgetown.
Three Naval Academy Graduates. Bobby Rudzki, Preston Lugar, TJ Kim.

We have a Tewaaraton winner (Matt Ward '02, UVA).

There have been dozens of alums who have served as captains in college.
