Basketball at Landon seeks to produce young men of curiosity and passion who embrace challenge and answer the call to service.

We expect our basketball players to live into each of the program's core values, known together as One HEART:

H – Hard Work: There are no overnight successes. There is no substitute for hard work!

The program builds on a strong foundation of caring relationships and implements purposeful, developmentally appropriate systems to add and maximize athletes’ learning experiences. We invest daily in the intellectual, athletic, and social-emotional growth of our athletes at every level of our community to help them fully realize their unique potential.

Program Overview

Our Varsity Program

Athletes who participate in basketball can expect a servant-leader culture that centers on their growth and development and assists them in reaching their potential, and, in turn, empowering them to serve others. They will be part of a process-driven program that imparts the value of preparation, the importance of fundamental building blocks, and the necessary character traits to achieve the program’s goals.

By the time they experience the basketball program, we hope our athletes are transformed by the experience. We hope to have instilled in them a vision of something greater than themselves and a joyous wonder about who they are and who they can become.

Unique to our program is our enthusiastic inclusion of multi-sport athletes. A number of our starting players play at least one other sport at the varsity level at Landon, and we work with them and their other coaches to accommodate their needs. Additionally, we rely on teacher-coach-mentors who coach at multiple levels to ensure the consistency of the program from Lower School all the way up to the varsity level.

Program Leadership

Head Coach Chris Bohlen, P'29 has been teaching and coaching at Landon since 2024.

He has been the varsity head coach since his arrival. Prior to Landon, Coach Bohlen taught history for Montgomery County Public Schools and has coached basketball at the collegiate and high school levels for more than 30 years. In addition to his basketball responsibilities, Coach Bohlen teaches Upper School history and coaches varsity outdoor track & field.

Accomplishments

Graduates of our program go on to play at the collegiate and professional levels.

Professional

Darion Atkins ’11 – professional experience in the NBA G League as well as in Israel, France, and Germany after playing at University of Virginia and earning National Defensive Player of the Year for both the ACC and the NCAA in 2015; currently plays for Niners Chemnitz in Germany
Kino Lilly ’21 – plays for the Surrey 89ers after being named First Team All-Ivy for his final three seasons at Brown University

NCAA

Recent graduates have played for such programs as Villanova University, Harvard University, Brown University, Amherst College, Washington & Lee University, and University of Lynchburg.

Two Landon graduates have been named to the Parade All-American Basketball Team: Joe McDonald ’12, who played for The George Washington University and led the team to the National Invitational Tournament title in 2016; and Fred Hetzel ‘61 — who had a stellar career at Landon and was the first overall pick of the 1965 NBA Draft after becoming an All-American at Davidson College.
