Wrestling at Landon is all about courage, perseverance, and teamwork.

The sport provides a unique opportunity to see these values in action every day.

Athletes demonstrate courage every time they step onto the mat. In a match, while coaches can offer guidance from the corner, wrestlers must think on their feet, make split-second decisions, and take full ownership of the outcome. That level of accountability requires tremendous courage, especially for teenage boys who are still developing confidence in themselves.
Our athletes push their physical and mental limits during training so that they can continue to compete when they are exhausted, uncomfortable, or facing adversity. Wrestlers learn that success often comes from enduring difficult situations and continuing to move forward when quitting would be easier.
Although wrestling is an individual sport, teammates motivate one another through grueling practices, encourage each other after tough losses, and challenge each other to improve even after victories. Our wrestlers understand that while they compete alone on the mat, they are never alone in their journey.

We expect our athletes to commit themselves fully to becoming the best version of themselves, both on and off the mat. Success in wrestling is not measured solely by wins and losses; it is measured by an athlete’s commitment to improvement, resilience in the face of challenges, and willingness to embrace hard work.

We also expect our wrestlers to be great teammates. Wrestling may be an individual sport during competition, but success is built collectively. Some of the most important moments in a wrestling room occur when athletes push each other through a difficult workout, offer encouragement after a tough loss, or celebrate a teammate’s success. When wrestlers learn to hold themselves accountable while lifting up those around them, they develop qualities that will serve them well long after their wrestling careers are over.

Program Overview

Our Varsity Program

Wrestling has a unique way of revealing and developing character. If athletes fully commit to the sport, they will learn a great deal about themselves—how they respond under pressure, how they handle adversity, and how they react when faced with difficult challenges. There are few places to hide in wrestling, which means athletes quickly learn the value of accountability, perseverance, and resilience.

Beyond the wins and losses, students can expect to gain life lessons that extend far beyond the mat. The confidence built from overcoming obstacles, the discipline developed through hard work, and the ability to keep moving forward when things get tough are skills that will serve them throughout their lives.

Wrestling prepares young men not only to be better athletes, but also to be stronger and more capable when they encounter life's inevitable challenges.

From an athletic standpoint, wrestlers will improve their strength, endurance, agility, balance, body control, and mental toughness. Athletes learn how to set goals, overcome adversity, manage setbacks, and push through challenges when success is not immediate. Because wrestling places individuals directly in the spotlight, athletes also develop self-confidence and a strong sense of personal responsibility for their actions and performance.

The lessons learned through wrestling—hard work, courage, humility, and perseverance—prepare young people to navigate life's challenges and become successful leaders, students, teammates, and community members.

Our coaching staff is highly invested in the success of our wrestlers, both during the season and throughout the year. We strive to build meaningful relationships with our athletes and provide guidance not only in wrestling but also in academics, leadership, and personal growth.

Teammates celebrate successes together, support one another through challenges, and create an environment where every athlete feels valued. This sense of belonging is one of the strongest aspects of our program and helps athletes thrive both on and off the mat.

Competitively, our schedule is among the toughest in the state, which helps our athletes reach their full potential and prepares them for success.

We also strongly encourage multi-sport participation. We recognize that competing in multiple sports helps athletes develop a broader range of skills, reduces burnout, and creates more complete student-athletes. Our goal is not simply to produce successful wrestlers, but to help young men grow into confident, resilient, and well-rounded athletes and individuals.

Program Leadership

Head Coach Andy Katz has been teaching and coaching at Landon since 1995 and has been the varsity head coach since his arrival.

Prior to Landon, Coach Katz served as founding wrestling coach at Heron Academy and St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, for four seasons each. He attended Shady Side Academy and was a three-time National Prep All-American and two-time team captain. Coach Katz wrestled collegiately at Franklin & Marshall College, where he, again, was a two-time captain, and was named Most Valuable Wrestler. He was a two-time EIWA place winner and placed fifth in Freestyle in the National Espoir Division. After college, Coach Katz was first alternate for the 1989 Maccabean Games and later represented the United States at the 1993 Maccabean Games, placing third in Freestyle and second in Greco-Roman. In addition to his wrestling responsibilities, Coach Katz teaches Upper School Math, serves as Form VI Dean, and assists with the operation of varsity football games, after having coached JV football and JV lacrosse for numerous seasons.

Accomplishments

Ultimately, our goal is not simply to produce successful wrestlers.

It is to develop men of character who are prepared to lead, serve, and make a meaningful impact in their communities long after they leave Landon.

Several wrestlers have continued their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Recent examples include David LaPrade ’23 at Williams College and James Hanley ’24 at Roger Williams University. Others have gone on to become successful leaders in business, finance, medicine, law, education, and entrepreneurship. A number of our program's alumni have also go on to compete in a different sport at the collegiate level.

One notable example is Todd Boehly ’91, whose success as an entrepreneur and investor ultimately led to his transformational support of Landon School, including the donation that helped make the current Upper School possible. While every graduate's path is different, the common thread is that wrestling teaches young men how to embrace challenges, overcome adversity, and pursue excellence.
