For more than 40 years, Peter M. Swinehart was a towering influence in Landon's English Department, and his popular classes earned him deep respect. Landon is proud to announce that Peter Arnold '82 has made a substantial endowment gift to establish the Peter M. Swinehart Chair in Literature & Composition.
"Such a fitting honoree in Peter Swinehart – a true gentleman and scholar – a model teacher and mentor. And such a fitting way to honor him. Faculty endowments are crucial to the vitality of great schools. Gifts to endowment are an investment in Landon's future – an ongoing commitment to our boys and their teachers, allowing Landon to live its mission to the fullest for years to come. Please join me in congratulating Mr. Swinehart for his many years of fine service to Landon and in thanking Peter Arnold for this generous and thoughtful approach to giving back to Landon and to thanking Mr. Swinehart for that service," said Headmaster Jim Neill.
The Peter M. Swinehart Chair in Literature & Composition will provide income to support teacher professional development to ensure Landon boys are well prepared for college and life. Additionally, the Swinehart Chair will honor a faculty member of the Middle or Upper School English department who has demonstrated excellence.
"More than any teacher at Landon or Dartmouth, Mr. Swinehart taught me the value of writing persuasively. For years, I have wanted to salute him while also helping future generations of Landon teachers. I hope the Swinehart Chair does both. Nearly 40 years after graduation, I still cannot imagine addressing him as anything other than 'Mr. Swinehart'," said Arnold.

After Dartmouth, Arnold was a White House speechwriter during the Reagan Administration. In 1998, he established a lobbying firm focusing on telecommunications, structured settlements, and environmental permitting.
