Tips to Starting off a Healthy New Year

This video and blog post are part of a series of #WellnessWednesday tips. Head Athletic Trainer Mike McCormick stresses that it is important to remember to focus on overall wellness. He shares helpful tips on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, setting goals, managing stress, and setting aside time for yourself.   

Nutrition  

  • Strive for 5 daily servings of fruits and vegetables 

  • Increase your water intake to stay hydrated 

  • Limit junk and fast food 

  • Cut out added sugar 

Sleep 

  • Regulate your sleep schedule to go to bed and wake up at roughly the same time every day 

  • Sleep in a dark room and aim for around 65 degrees 

Exercise 

  • Do something active everyday 

  • Do strength training exercises 2-3 times a week 

  • Have fun!  

Goal setting 

  • Evaluate your short- and long-term goals and revisit them weekly  

Stress 

  • Recognize stressful situations and practice breathing or meditation to decrease your heart rate 

Kindness 

  • Tell someone you appreciate them 

  • Thank someone for doing something for you 

Take some time for you 

  • Each day set aside some time to do something you love
