Pierce Smith ′62 has committed $1 million to Landon School with the establishment of The Carol and Pierce Smith ′62 Chair for the Fine Arts. Smith's gift to Landon includes a commitment of $250,000, and an additional $750,000 has been included in his estate plan. The income from the Fund will exclusively support the fine arts, including performing arts, studio arts, visual arts, music and other related areas of study and will begin with the 2023-24 academic year upon maturity of the endowed chair.
The Fund will also provide professional development support to a member of the faculty as well as operational support for the studio and performing arts programs. Endowed chairs also serve as an inspiration to our school community to continue to develop a dynamic and innovative academic program, driven by careful examination and assessment of the teaching skills needed to respond to a rapidly changing world.
Pierce graduated from Yale University and then Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He also served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard. He pursued a career in the financial services industry, retiring as Executive Vice President, Treasurer, and Comptroller of PaineWebber Group. He now lives in Rhinebeck, New York and Highland Beach, Florida.
Smith's late wife, Carol, had an extensive 35-year career in art history as a curator, cataloguer, and author of numerous books. She worked at various institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Carol was the author of Illustrated Books from the Collection of the Museum of Modern Art and co-author of The Prints of Louise Bourgeois.
In establishing this endowed chair, Smith says, "Carol and I were art collectors all of our lives and spent much of our free time and vacations prowling around museums and galleries all over the world. I have always felt that a deep exposure to the fine arts is a critical component of one's education and life. I hope that this gift will help to give every Landon student the chance to find as much pleasure through the fine arts as I have."
Please join us in thanking Pierce Smith and all of our benefactors who have supported the growth of endowment at Landon School. The Carol and Pierce Smith ′62 Chair for the Fine Arts will enhance funding to ensure the fine arts will continue to prosper at Landon.
