Endowed Funds

This fund was established in 1978 in memory of Robert S. Banks ’56 by his family and friends. The fund provides financial aid assistance to a deserving student.

This fund was established by Robert Buchanan ’60 in 1986 as part of A Campaign for Landon. It is used to support financial aid for a deserving student.

This scholarship was established in 1989 by members of the Class of 1983 in memory of their classmate, Calvin Thorpe.  The fund is used to provide financial assistance to a student of color in the Middle or Upper School.

This fund was established in 1981 in memory of Mrs. Norene Davis, the grandmother of five alumni: Floyd E. "Skip" Davis III '71 and John Davis '74; Chris '70, Davis '73 and Greg '86 Camalier; and great-grandmother of Matt '00 and Brian '02 Walker; Teddy '02 and Colin Diefenach '06; Tyler '06, Patrick '08 and Matthew '12 Hunt;  Hunter '13 and Spencer '18 Davis; and Davis ‘14 and Charles Colby  ’17 Camalier. The gift is established by the Floyd E. Davis family. This scholarship goes to a student in the Middle or Upper School.

The Edward E. Ford Fund provides financial aid assistance to a student of color in the Upper School.

Established in memory of Landon's longtime Assistant Headmaster by his family and many friends and supported with a generous gift by Mr. and Mrs. Richard C. Kellogg, Jr. ’70, this fund supports financial aid grants for the sons of Landon alumni.

Established by Mr. Maurice R. Povich ’57 and Mrs. Connie Chung in memory of Mr. Povich's father, the legendary Washington Post sports columnist, Shirley Povich. This scholarship supports financial aid to two students residing within the District of Columbia.

The James E. MacCloskey Scholarship Fund was established in memory of James Edward MacCloskey, Jr., by Mr. and Mrs. Howard F. Rough and William Howard Rough ’57 in honor and in memory of their father and grandfather.

The Baltimore family established The Thomas J. Baltimore Jr. Family Scholarship Fund in 2008 as part of the Landon United Campaign. The scholarship supports financial aid for a deserving student.

The David P. Adkins Fund was established in 2011 when David passed away and incorporated funds from the Class of 1969 Fund from the 30th Reunion. Income from the Fund is used to support the scholarship/financial aid award of a Landon student.

The Jonathan D. Schiller ’65 Endowed Scholarship was established in 2011 by Mr. Schiller to support a student who resides in Washington, D.C.

The Dippell-Korengold-Ourisman Scholarship was established in 2011 as part of the Landon United campaign. The scholarship benefits a deserving Landon student.

The Helen and Anderson J. Arnold ’78 Endowed Fund for Financial Aid was established in 2012 to support the many extra costs incurred by boys receiving financial aid. The draw from the fund supports needs in the areas of athletic equipment, musical instrument rental, music lessons, and other costs that might be incurred.

The Dortzbach Family Scholarship Fund was established in 2013 in memory of Dr. Karl and Rachel Dortzbach by Dr. Richard Karl ’55 and Laura Dortzbach.  This fund establishes a scholarship for a deserving Landon student.

Established in 2013 as part of the Landon United Campaign, the A. Anthony Tappe ’46 Scholarship supports financial aid and an annual art award.

Established by Landon friends in classmates to honor the memory of Robert J. Miller ’84, the endowment will be used for financial aid once the fund reaches $100,000.

Established in 2014 with a gift from Mr. and Mrs. John Slack III ’61, the intention is for the Class of 1961 to join in support of this fund.

This fund was established in 1999 by the Ferris family and the Class of 1994 to honor the memory of Mark Ferris ’94 who died suddenly in 1999.  The scholarship is presented to a financially needy senior each year who best exemplifies the qualities of enthusiasm and perseverance which Mark displayed during his too short life.

The Justin D. Simon Scholarship Fund for Hispanic Students was established in 2001 in memory of Justin Simon, father of Adam Simon ’96. This fund supports financial aid for a Hispanic student at Landon.

Established in 2001 with gifts made in memory of the Klurfelds, parents of Zachary Klurfeld ’04, who were killed in a tragic car accident. The fund helps to defray the cost of tutoring, field trips, music lessons, and other expenses that are in addition to the cost of tuition for boys receiving financial aid.

Established by George (Ted) Rogers III ’87 in 2018, this endowed fund seeks to aid in attracting and admitting the most qualified students.  This fund specifically supports financial aid for alumni children so that they may engage in the full Landon experience.

The Ethan H. Freed ’11 Endowed Merit Scholarship was established in 2019 in memory of Ethan H. Freed, the eldest son of Susan and Jeffrey Freed and brother to Adam ’13 and Alex ’18. Through the Ethan H. Freed ’11 Endowed Merit Scholarship, we remember Ethan fondly and award a scholarship to a Landon boy who lives his life according to Ethan’s core beliefs of honesty, civility, perseverance, and good sportsmanship—key attributes of a Landon School education.

By providing necessary resources to deserving boys, the Ethan H. Freed ’11 Endowed Merit Scholarship will assist the school in attracting high-achieving, high-potential students and strengthen the school’s community of learners. The Ethan H. Freed ’11 Endowed Merit Scholarship directly supports Landon’s mission to nurture the whole boy—a critical point at the heart of an all-boys independent school education.

To further its commitment to academic and personal excellence, the Landon School seeks to grow the School's endowment. The Class of 1970 supports this important goal by establishing The James P. McEwan ’70 Endowed Scholarship. We honor our classmate, Jamie McEwan, whose exemplary character, integrity, and achievements celebrate the outcomes Landon seeks in its graduates.  In establishing this scholarship, we remember Jamie's integrity in the fullest sense of that word—a deep and vigilant commitment to a life where all the pieces (mind, body, family, friends, community) are in dynamic interplay and harmony. We recognize that this scholarship directly supports the School's mission to nurture the whole boy—a critical point at the heart of independent school education. By providing financial resources to deserving students who demonstrate the highest standard of excellence as students and leaders among their peers, The James P. McEwan ’70 Endowed Scholarship will further the School's ability to enroll and sustain high-achieving, high-potential boys, thus strengthening the School's community of learners.   

The Vanessa Burchett Endowed Scholarship was established by Dwaine Alleyne ’00, Nii Amaah K. Ofosu-Amaah ’00, and friends to honor Vanessa Burchett. In establishing this scholarship, we remember Vanessa’s deep and vigilant commitment to the teaching and mentoring of Landon’s youngest bears. Vanessa will be long remembered for her warm approach, ensuring the young men in her care would thrive in the world which awaits them. In addition, we recognize that this scholarship directly supports the school’s mission to nurture the whole boy—a critical point at the heart of independent school education. By providing financial resources to a Lower School student of color, the Vanessa Burchett Endowed Scholar demonstrates the highest standard of excellence as a student and leader among their peers. The Vanessa Burchett Endowed Scholarship will further the school’s ability to enroll and sustain high-achieving, high-potential boys, thus strengthening the school’s community of learners. Additionally, the Vanessa Burchett Endowed Scholarship demonstrates Landon School’s conviction to fully embrace the importance of diversity and equity in our community as we seek to be a place where all feel included and welcomed.  This scholarship will be awarded once it is fully funded.
 

The Grayson W. Hanes '16 Endowed Scholarship was established in 2021 in memory of Grayson W. Hanes '16, son of Dana and Grayson S. Hanes. Grayson was a kind, thoughtful, and humble person. He cared so much for his fellow bears lifting their spirits with stories and encouraging words. Grayson always saw the good in people. He was insightful and profound, and those around him were drawn to his generous spirit. The Grayson W. Hanes '16 Endowed Scholarship encourages others to live selflessly like Grayson.

Through the Grayson W. Hanes '16 Endowed Scholarship, we remember Grayson fondly and award a scholarship to a Landon boy who lives his life according to Grayson's core beliefs of kindness, gratitude, and humility, values central to a Landon education. By providing necessary resources to deserving boys, the Grayson W. Hanes '16 Endowed Scholarship will assist the school in attracting young men who ground their actions in ethical principles exploring what makes an honorable life. In addition, the Grayson W. Hanes '16 Endowed Scholarship directly supports Landon's mission to nurture the whole boy—a critical point at the heart of an all-boys independent school education.

To further its commitment to academic and personal excellence, Landon School seeks to grow the school’s endowment.  The Class of 1982 supports this important goal by establishing The Yogi Todd Endowed Scholarship in memory of Todd Breier ‘82.  We honor our classmate whose achievements celebrate the outcomes Landon seeks in its graduates.  In establishing this scholarship, we remember Todd as a student-athlete succeeding in multiple sports at Landon and at University of Virginia.  Todd was a world traveler extraordinaire who enjoyed his many years teaching English to multiple generations of Taiwanese students. We recognize that this scholarship directly supports the school’s mission to nurture the whole boy—a critical point at the heart of independent school education.

The Jesmer Family Endowed Scholarship was established in 2023 by Kendall and Rob Jesmer, P’25 P’29, to honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces, law enforcement, fire, United States security personnel, and first responders who dedicate their lives to the service of others. The Jesmer Family Endowed Scholarship will assist the School in attracting young men in grades 9-12 who are sons of service personnel whose actions are grounded in ethical principles, exploring what makes an honorable life. In addition, the Jesmer Family Endowed Scholarship directly supports Landon's mission to nurture the whole boy—a critical point at the heart of an all-boys independent school education.

The Altman Endowed Scholarship was established by the Altman Family in 2023 in memory of Robert A. Altman. Lynda Carter, James Altman '06, and Jessica Altman honor a father and husband whose impact on their lives is immeasurable. The Altman Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to Landon boys who live according to our core beliefs of kindness, gratitude, and humility, values central to a Landon education. By providing necessary resources to deserving boys, the Altman Family Scholarship will assist the School in attracting young men who ground their actions in ethical principles, exploring what makes an honorable life. In addition, the Scholarship directly supports Landon's mission to nurture the whole boy - a critical point at the heart of an all-boys independent school education.

The Hanks Endowed Scholarship was established in 2025 in memory of Thomas Hanks ’62 and John Hanks ’65 by their classmates, to honor their distinguished public service in geophysical science and medical teaching, respectively.

Thomas C. Hanks ’62 graduated cum laude from Landon, where he edited The Landon News and played football and baseball. At Princeton, he majored in geological engineering, followed by a Ph.D. in geophysics at Caltech. Tom spent his entire career with the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif., achieving international prominence in seismology. He co-created the Hanks/Kanamori (Moment Magnitude) Scale, which improved upon the Richter Scale in measuring powerful earthquakes. Tom was given the Landon Headmaster’s Award at his graduation, and as an alumnus, was given the Anthony Edward Kupka ’64 Award for distinguished achievement in his career.

John B. Hanks '65 graduated cum laude from Landon, where he edited the Brown & White yearbook and played football and soccer. He studied premed at Princeton, received his medical degree from the University of Rochester, and did his residency in thoracic surgery at Duke. In his long career at the University of Virginia Hospital and School of Medicine, John served as chief of general surgery, president of the clinical staff, and holder of an endowed professorship. He was honored by his peers with election to the American Board of Surgery and presidency of the Southeastern Surgical Conference

The endowment fund was established in June 2023 by an anonymous donor as part of The Campaign for Landon. Annual draw from the fund will be directed towards financial aid.

Selected by the Head of School, the William F. Banks Family Chair will be held for a term of three years and carry an annual stipend ($3,000) above and beyond the normal compensation package.

This fund was established by the Class of 1954 under the leadership of Paul B. Kern ’54 during their 50th reunion. The fund was generously augmented through a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Buchanan ’60.  The chair holder is responsible for establishing and implementing a program of ethics and leadership education in all divisions of the School.

Established in 1996 with generous contributions from Mr. and Mrs. Knight Kiplinger ’65/Kiplinger Foundation, Mr. Robert Fogarty ’69 and Mr. and Mrs. Pierce Smith ’62, the fund honors Maclear Jacoby, Landon math teacher, tennis coach, and former Middle School Head. "The Chairholder will be a superior teacher whose educational perspective reflects Mac Jacoby's desire that the recipient be one whose excellence in mathematics is exceeded only by his/her desire to go the extra mile for anyone having trouble with the subject."

This endowed teaching chair honors Tom Dixon, longtime Landon English Master. It was established with a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Richard C. Kellogg, Jr. ’70.

The Steven B. Sorkin Fund was established to create an endowed chair to honor Steve's unique contribution to the school through his caring and supportive relationship with the students. It will be named the Landon Endowed Chair for the Teacher-Advisor and will be renamed in Steve's honor when he retires to the Steven B. Sorkin Endowed Chair for the Teacher-Advisor.

The Endowed Chair for Teaching and Coaching was created in honor of Robinson M. Bordley ’66, who exemplifies the ideal of the teacher-coach-mentor who inspires boys to high achievement in the classroom and on the athletic field.

This chair was established in 2000 through the generous lead support of Mr. and Mrs. M. Dendy Young. Additional support was also received from Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Aschenbach, Redcoats, Inc.; Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Giordano; Mr. and Mrs. George Vincent; and Mr. Daniel R. Young.

The Carol and Pierce Smith ’62 Chair for the Fine Arts provides modest professional development support to a member of the faculty in those disciplines as well as operational support for the Studio and Performing Arts programs. The Carol and Pierce Smith ’62 Chair for the Fine Arts directly supports the advancement of the Fine Arts program by developing and strengthening the quality of the overall Landon education.

Of the many ways that teaching excellence is nurtured and recognized at Landon School, the awarding of an endowed faculty chair is one of the most significant. Peter Arnold '82 established The Peter M. Swinehart Chair in Literature & Composition in 2019.

Literary study necessarily confronts us with the richness of human experiences, helping us to appreciate common values and the differences between those experiences across cultures, places, and times. Peter M. Swinehart, a master of the English language, taught at Landon School for more than forty years, delivering excellence in education to generations of boys.  Serving as a mentor to his colleagues, Mr. Swinehart was one of the early architects of the humanities program and instrumental in ensuring innovation and creativity was at the forefront of a Landon boys education. The Landon community will be forever grateful to Mr. Swinehart for his dedicated service to the teaching profession.

Income from the Peter M. Swinehart Chair in Literature & Composition exclusively supports the study of "Literature of Accepted Critical Merit" (LACM) and efforts to promote better writing among Landon students. The Peter M. Swinehart Chair in Literature & Composition will honor a member of the faculty who has demonstrated excellence in teaching LACM. Income from the Swinehart Chair will also support (1) teacher professional development in writing instruction focusing on LACM and (2) excellence in implementing methods to help students improve their writing.

The purpose of the gift is to establish The Baison Family Endowed Chair in Science at Landon School. The following language will be used in perpetuity to describe the purpose of the Chair:
In 2022, Elizabeth S. Baison and Gregory L. Baison established an endowed chair dedicated to the disciplines of science. Science, including computer science, has a rapidly changing knowledge base and expanding relevance to societal issues, and teachers will need ongoing opportunities to build their understanding and ability. Teachers also must have opportunities to develop an understanding of how students with diverse interests, abilities, and experiences make sense of scientific ideas and what a teacher does to support and guide all students. And teachers require the opportunity to study and engage in research on science teaching and learning, and to share with colleagues what they have learned. By recognizing and rewarding teaching excellence, the Baison Endowed Chair for Science generates funds for professional development to enhance the quality of a Landon education.

The purpose of the gift is to establish The Wenchel Family Endowed Chair in STEM at Landon School. The following language will be used in perpetuity to describe the purpose of the Chair: 
In 2021, George Wenchel '65 established an endowed chair dedicated to the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics commonly known as STEM. Established to recognize faculty excellence, this gift honors a classroom teacher for their outstanding leadership in STEM education. By recognizing and rewarding teaching excellence, the Wenchel Family Endowed Chair for STEM generates funds for professional development to enhance the quality of a Landon education. 

Established in 1976, The Victor O. Schinnerer Fund for Faculty Enrichment provides financial assistance to Landon teachers for summer study. Members of Mr. Schinnerer's family, including his son, William ’61, have added to the fund in recent years.

The Robert O. Scholz Fund for Faculty Development supports faculty professional development opportunities.

Established as part of A Campaign for Landon by Mr. and Mrs. Thaddeus Lindner P’72, P’77 and their son Russell C. Lindner ’72, P’15, this fund supports the transportation costs for students of color who receive financial aid and live in the District of Columbia.

This fund provides financial support to a qualified Landon student and was established by the Class of 1956 in 2006 in honor of its 50th Reunion.

This fund was established in 1974 with a grant from E.E. Ford which was received in January 1975. The annual draw is used to support increased faculty salaries. Landon looks to recruit and retain a talented group of faculty and this endowment contributes to our ability to provide competitive salary and benefits packages to our faculty.

This fund was established in 1997 by Mr. and Mrs. Peter M. D'Ambrosio P ’01, ’05 through the Landon Forever campaign. Income from this fund is used to support faculty summer study and curriculum development.

The Endowed Professional Development Fund for Learning Support was established to provide funding to ensure classroom teachers have access to conferences, workshops, and onsite seminars to fully understand how all boys learn, including those with learning differences. By identifying the instructional approaches, tools, and accommodations that lead to the greatest success for everyone, we seek to optimize the learning experience for every boy. The Endowed Professional Development Fund for Learning Support directly supports the work of the Center for Teaching and Learning to advance the awareness of the faculty regarding teaching strategies that engage all our boys.

The CPR Fund was established by Robert Cohen and Joanne Peck after the tragedy at the Landon vs St. Albans lacrosse game in 1991. The Fund pays for CPR training for all Form III boys, faculty and staff.

The Excellence in Teaching Fund was established in 1986 by The Honorable and Mrs. John Danforth, parents of Thomas ’91. Each year the draw is used to support a stipend that is paid equally to two teachers selected by Division Heads, Assistant Head of School, and Headmaster. The award is made confidentially.

The Class of 1957 Fund for Faculty Housing provides funding for faculty members and senior administrators to live either in residences located on or adjacent to campus or in apartments in nearby Bethesda. Given the high cost of living in the Washington, D.C., area, this endowed fund helps Landon recruit and retain both senior administrators as well as young teacher-coach-mentors.  The Fund was established in 1992 by the Class of 1957 in honor of its 35th Reunion.

Begun by the family and friends of Carlos Parsons ’77 in memory of the former Landon Cross Country and Track Captain. The fund  supports Landon's track and field and cross-country teams.

The Christopher Nelson ’86 Memorial Leadership Fund was established by the Nelson family and their friends to honor the memory of Chris Nelson.  The fund supports an annual lecture series on leadership and excellence in a particular field of endeavor at assembly programs for the entire student body.

This fund was begun in 1993 by her sons and stepsons as a memorial to Mrs. Ourisman, a longtime Landon parent and lifelong devotee of the theater. Income from the fund benefits dramatic productions at Landon.

Dr. Mark Richards ’75 and his wife established this fund in memory of their infant son in 1994.  Each year this fund provides a cash award to support a special program in math or science by a Landon Upper School student.

Student award to pursue further study in Government or Political Science.

This fund is named for George Boiardi ’00 who died suddenly while playing lacrosse at Cornell University. It celebrates the values he exhibited as a student-athlete at Landon and Cornell: ethical courage, humility, tenacity, inclusivity, and service to others.  The fund supports a program to bring nationally known speakers to the Landon campus to speak on topics relating to ethical issues.

Established by the Board of Trustees in 2003 in honor of Landon's 75th anniversary, this fund provides support for faculty salaries and benefits and honors teachers with 20 years or more of service to the School.

The Drew Doggett ’02 Photography Award supports an annual award to a member of the Upper School who is considered to be the single best student of photography for that school year.

This award honors the memory of Patrick Tanner ’96 and was made possible through the generous support of his family and friends. It is presented each year to a senior for outstanding contributions to Landon's community service program.

This fund was established by the family of John P. Leachman ’45 in his name. There were initial gifts from his three sons, Jack ’69, Tom ’72, and Scott ’77. In addition, other family and friends have contributed to this fund over the years.  Each year, the Leachman family will be given three options or choices in which the fund may assist in areas like financial aid, academic support, or teacher/coach salaries.

Established by his classmates and the Gillespie family, this fund honors Julian "Gilly" Gillespie ’48 who died in 1982.  Gilly was an outstanding soccer player during his Landon years and was very active as an alumni leader before his untimely death.  Income from this fund supports the soccer program at Landon and provides an annual award to an outstanding member of the Varsity Soccer team.

Named to honor Bob Condit upon his retirement in 2001, the fund supports Landon's Community Service program.  In addition, the Landon Fathers Club established an award in Bob's name to honor a member of the junior class for outstanding leadership in community service.

The Maclear Jacoby Endowed Fund was established by Leslie and Bruce McNair ’73 to honor the legacy of Maclear "Mac" Jacoby.  The endowment will not only support Landon School's historic tennis program, but also the athletic department and programs that Mac worked tirelessly towards as a coach, administrator, official, statistician, manager, and announcer (the "voice" of Bears football).  The Landon tennis program has produced more than 20 national individual champions and team titles.

The Bou Family Foundation Endowed Fund honors the dedication of the men and women of our buildings and grounds departments who ensure our campus meets the needs of our boys, our teacher-coach-mentors and our community each day. The Foundation was equally inspired by a desire to support the historic preservation of the Farmhouse, which was originally a tenants' home on the Andrews Family Estate. The Farmhouse later became the residence of the school's founders, Paul Landon and Mary Lee Banfield, and is now used for school meetings and special events.

Established as part of The Campaign for Landon, the purpose of the Helen and Anderson Arnold ’78 Endowed Fund for Academic Enrichment is to provide financial resources to ensure that teaching practices at Landon are as current, creative, and engaging as possible, so that the School can tap the tremendous potential of all of its students. The resources will do this by supporting the work of the Center for Teaching and Learning and the learning specialists who are part of it as they work with teachers, students, and administrators to advance the quality of teaching at Landon and the awareness of the faculty regarding teaching tactics that engage all of our boys.

The Athletic Fund for Rugby and Wrestling was established in June 2023 by an anonymous donor as part of The Campaign for Landon. Annual draw from the fund will be directed towards the needs of the rugby and/or wrestling teams. The Director of Athletics and Director of Development will work to make sure each program benefits. 

The Endowed Lacrosse Fund was established in 2024 by Maria, Kirk and Jackson '22 Galiani to honor the legacy of teaching, coaching, and mentoring of young men. The Galiani Family encourages others to contribute to the Fund to further enhance resources available for Landon lacrosse. The Endowed Lacrosse Fund honors coaches and administrators who work tirelessly to expertly hone athletic ability, strengthen physical and mental health, life-long relationships, and mentor each boy's development as a competitor and a young man of character. The Endowed Lacrosse Fund ensures athletics is a cornerstone of the Landon experience, promoting character development, and collaboration. Income from this fund will be directed by the Director of Athletics and the Head Lacrosse Coach to enhance the lacrosse program by providing necessary programmatic needs such as equipment, facility enhancements or repairs, and other needs. The Endowed Lacrosse Fund will further the School's ability to enroll and sustain high-achieving, high-potential boys, thus strengthening the School's community of learners.
