Landon School is committed to the ethical, intellectual, and personal development of boys. The Opportunity

The Board of Trustees at Landon seeks the seventh Head of School to lead this enduring institution, approaching its centennial in 2029-2030 with a profound appreciation for its storied history and high aspirations for its future. A school for boys in grades 3 through 12, Landon prides itself on its rigorous, caring approach to educating boys and young men.

The next Head of School will embrace the opportunity to nurture the intellectual, moral, physical, and personal growth of the boys and to lead a dedicated, talented community of faculty and staff, all deeply devoted to the School's mission and values. A leader with strong executive skills and experiences, the next Head of School will have the soul of an educator, a strong moral compass, and the desire to make a great school even greater. A role model for the students and Landon community, the Head of School will not only exemplify the qualities outlined in the Portrait of a Graduate but also embrace the School’s Core Values and Character Pledge.

In partnership with the Board of Trustees, the Head is responsible for setting the School's strategic priorities and uniting the community around the School's mission. As the educational leader, the Head is responsible for the School's overall program; as an administrative officer, the Head is responsible for directing the faculty and staff, assuring the long-term financial sustainability of the School; as the external face of the school, the Head represents the School with the alumni body, the parents, and the local and national education community; and as a principal fundraiser, the Head welcomes the opportunity to forge strong relationships with the donors.

Lastly and perhaps most importantly, the Head will be energized by the opportunity to spend time—formally and informally—with the boys. An exemplar of the "teacher-coach-mentor" role that distinguishes the School, the Head will cherish time with the boys, recognizing that every interaction accrues value to the education and development of the students.

Our Story

Since its founding in 1929 by Paul and Mary Lee Banfield, Landon School has prepared generations of boys to become accomplished, responsible, and caring men. For nearly a century, this mission has been made possible by dedicated men and women who have tirelessly shared their talent and expertise, by students eager to engage in the challenges Landon has introduced to them, and by the demanding, high-minded expectations Landon has set before them. This program develops our boys as scholars and servant-leaders, as thinkers and creators, as men of character and commitment who are ready for college and life beyond. Our connected and devoted school community leads Landon forward and models the engagement that is essential to a life well lived.

Today, Landon prides itself in record enrollment, record fundraising, and a unique position in the competitive Washington, D.C., independent school marketplace as the only all-boys, non-religious, grades 3-12 school in the D.C. metro area.

Our Promise

Every day, Landon aspires to deliver a unique experience for boys and their families, one where each student is challenged and inspired to think broadly and deeply; to embody the timeless values of respect, perseverance, and honor; to seek balance and pursue excellence in all endeavors; and to become the best version of himself.

Our Program

Boys thrive at Landon because every aspect of our program is designed intentionally for them. We introduce academic challenge in ways that reflect how boys learn best. From a schedule that encourages movement and offers breathing room to enhance cognitive development, to faculty versed in the most proven teaching styles for boys, to 75 acres of green fields, studios, labs, and fresh air, the difference is palpable—and represents what serves boys best.

In addition to our comprehensive and engaging academic program, every boy at Landon participates in arts and athletics. We believe requiring a boy to engage in an array of experiences, while providing him with multiple levels of support and guidance, introduces him to passions and abilities he didn't know he had. This approach is essential to his emotional, social, physical, and intellectual growth. The ability to challenge himself, to constructively compete with those around him, to work hard toward a goal, and to learn from mistakes are essential skills for him to develop. Guided by a balanced, well-rounded experience, Landon boys find excellence in whatever they want to pursue.

Our Culture

The goodness and vast human potential inherent in boys inspires our focus on character development. We know boys will rise to the expectations set for them. That is why our Character Pledge is at the core of what we do every day. We develop caring and thoughtful men who realize that their views and ideas matter, that their words can lift others, and that their actions, guided by respect, empathy, inclusivity, and civility, can effect positive change. It is not just worthy work; it is a moral obligation we owe to our boys, their families, and the world to develop young men who live honorable and ethical lives.

Our People

We know that boys work harder and achieve more when they respect and connect with their teachers. Landon faculty are experts in boys' education and know that boys will only fully open themselves to complex intellectual problems and inspirational ideas when they trust that their teachers genuinely care about their well-being and success. This is the basis of our entire educational approach—what we call our teacher-coach-mentor model—and the exceptional men and women at Landon treat this responsibility with the seriousness, commitment, and energy it deserves.

Landon is beloved among our community of students, faculty, parents, and alumni who are always willing to help Landon boys with life advice or career guidance. Our alumni are internationally renowned musicians, CEOs, entrepreneurs, educators, doctors, developers, financiers, legislators, legal experts, professional athletes, and so much more. But at their core, they are Landon Bears. Whatever path a Landon boy chooses, he will have the support of Bears everywhere because they trust the character, intellect, and work ethic that stem from this shared experience.
