Matthew Guo ’25 is one of 16,000 semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program in recognition of his outstanding academic promise as a result of his PSAT/NMSQT score.
He is one of 17 Montgomery County independent school students to earn the honor.
From Landon, (pictured above, front row, from left) seniors Asher Josef, Luke Mearns, Thavisha Ponnamperuma, (back row, from left) Eli Smink, Noah Forrest, Sherlock Grigsby, and Matthew Lynn were named National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Students.
Guo will find out if he is a finalist for the program in February 2025. If selected, he could receive a scholarship for his undergraduate education.
“He is an excellent student with sharp insights into problems and the logic of their solutions,” said Upper School Math Teacher Bill Zaiser. “He is a first-rate mathematical talent with considerable potential in the field.”
Matthew is considering pursuing pre-med or engineering studies in college. He is also an accomplished viola player in the Upper School string orchestra.
“Matthew is one of the most talented students that I have worked with. He has been recognized by earning third chair in the Maryland All State Orchestra. His musicianship, technique and kindness are superb,” said Stephen Czarkowski, Director of Strings.
“This recognition is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and exceptional academic abilities,” Upper School Science Teacher Vivian English, who is Guo’s adviser, said. “Beyond his impressive achievements, Matthew remains humble and supportive of his peers, embodying the spirit of leadership and collaboration.”
Landon students are consistently recognized by the College Board for their academic excellence as National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists. Recent semifinalists include Thomas Shelton ’24, Lawerence Li ’23, Kyle Radimer '21, and Drew Curran ’20 and Alec Mearns ’20.
