Landon News delivers in the Lower School

Breaking news in the Lower School! The Landon News Network begins each new week delivering top stories and exclusive interviews.

“It's a way to share some information about how the week is going to go and what are some things to look forward to,” Miles M. ’31 explained.

Miles and his fellow student council members Braden S. ’31, Brendan B. ’31, Saneyuki S. ’31, and Colby B. ’31 produce the weekly broadcast with support from Steven Micciche, Grade 5/6 Dean of Student Life and Math Teacher.

“We were in one of our student council meetings talking about how we could get some information to the Lower School in a quick and easy but also fun way, so we came up with the idea to do a broadcast during morning meeting and it turned out really well,” said Saneyuki.

Every Monday at 8:20 a.m., students across all homerooms tune in via Zoom to catch the latest Landon-focused news.

“I love that everybody gets to tune in and listen. We tell everybody what sports games are coming up. We can tell everybody who won or who lost. We’ll sometimes tell everyone what’s on the menu for lunch,” said Colby. “I love the student council. I love getting to do new things. I love helping our community.”

The broadcasts also feature a brief interview with a student, faculty member, or staff member.

"Mr. Micciche prints out a sheet and we read over it and each week we rotate who is going to be speaking. Generally, we talk to the person we’re going to be interviewing just to get a little knowledge of what we’re going to be talking about,” said Colby.

These young anchors, reporters, and producers have not only kept their peers informed, but have also honed valuable skills.

“The boys have gained public speaking experience, time management practice, and responsibility, which has built confidence and agency,” said Micciche.

“It definitely helps with public speaking, being able to speak clearly and get the information out without stumbling on the words. That’s what it helped me with,” added Saneyuki.

Looking ahead, the goal is for the boys to take full ownership of the LNN, from writing the news to managing the technical aspects of the broadcast. The plan is to expand the LNN reach by involving more students.

“Next year, the Landon News Network is going to be more like a club,” said Miles. “It’ll give more students an opportunity to do something that will help their community.”

“I’m so proud of the boys for taking this from inception to a smooth-running operation and also what could become a Landon tradition.” said Micciche.
