Math challenge multiplies Halloween fun
The Math Department is sponsoring a school-wide contest inspired by the season. Each division faces a different math problem. Who can calculate correctly and walk away with the prize?

In the Lower School, the challenge is to guess the weight of the pumpkin in pounds and ounces. The person with the closest guess wins the pumpkin.

In the Middle School, the challenge has two parts. Part one is to guess the volume of the pumpkin. Part two is to guess the mass of candy corn that would displace the same volume as the pumpkin. The person with the closest guess will win a bag of candy just in time for Halloween.

In the Upper School, the challenge is a bit more complicated. If the pumpkin and the candy corn from the Middle School contest were placed on a balance and the pumpkin was one meter from the fulcrum of the balance, how far would the candy corn need to be placed to maintain equilibrium? The answer must be written in centimeters. The person with the closest guess will win a gift certificate.

For faculty and staff, the challenge is to guess how far Ty ’23 can throw the pumpkin. Ty will hurl the pumpkin as far as he can after school on Friday, October 28. The measured distance will be from the throwing line to the first point of contact with the ground. The person with the closest guess will win a gift certificate for a pie from Henry’s Sweet Retreat.
