Baseball and Tennis won shares of the IAC title, Lacrosse won the IAC championship outright, Golf won the Maryland Private School State Championship, and 26 players were named to All-IAC and All-MAVRC teams. Here is a summary of the 2025 spring sports season.
Varsity Teams
Baseball
In his second season, Head Coach Henry Martinez, along with captains Luke Hibey ’25, Sam Rosand ’25, and two-time captain George Lee ’25, led the team to another IAC championship series. Although the team ultimately fell to Georgetown Prep in two games, they were just one win away from a perfect IAC regular season, sweeping every team and splitting the regular-season series against Prep. The team also secured the one seed going into the tournament, allowing the players to enjoy a quarterfinal bye for the first time in years. At the season’s conclusion, Jaxon Garon ’27, Manny Monsalve ’26, Ben Pollack ’25, Matthew Rosner ’27, and Bo White ’26 were named All-IAC.
Golf
Led by Head Coach Andy Luther and captains Will LeBlanc ’26 and Mac Marshall ’25, the golf team had some great success this season, winning the Maryland Private School Championship Tournament with LeBlanc placing as a tournament Silver Medalist. Overall, the team finished solidly in second place in both the IAC regular season and at the IAC tournament. At the IAC tournament, Kyle Dyer ’27 was the Silver Medalist with the second-lowest round of the tournament, and Dyer, along with LeBlanc and Marshall, earned All-IAC honors. With the team’s second-place finish in the IAC, the golfers advanced to the Washington Metropolitan Golf Championship (“Metros”). The team’s score of 381 was one of the lowest scores at Metros in program history, led by the third-place finish of Teddy Cooper ’27, who shot an even-par 72. Another highlight of the season was the annual Freeman Memorial Tournament, in memory of Joshua Freeman ’83. Not only did the team win the tournament, but George Aoun ’28 shot 6 under par, 66, for a new course record at Bayside Resort Golf Club. With so many great performances from underclassmen this season, the future of Landon golf is looking bright!
Lacrosse
After clinching the IAC Championship with a talented group of graduating players, including three All-Americans, one of whom was the Washington Post All-Met Player of the Year, questions swirled about the coming lacrosse season – could the team repeat their success? Head Coach Will McGettigan and captains Sean Murray ’25, Eli Smink ’25, and Caden Southworth ’25 were up to the challenge. And repeat they did – the team was one overtime goal away from a perfect season and were the outright IAC champions, winning both the regular season and the tournament two years in a row and becoming the first IAC team to do so since Landon pulled it off in the 2001 and 2002 seasons. This team can boast eight All-IAC players: Logan Cassidy ’25, Hayden Goozh ’25, Murray (who was also named Co-Player of the Year for the IAC), Stephen Riso ’25, Smink, Talan Smith ’25, Southworth, and Devin Stewart ’25.
Outdoor Track & Field
With appearances on the national stage and strong individual performances, this year’s outdoor season was a boon for the program’s culture. The roster, bolstered by captains Russell DeCain ’25 and Milan Matteis ’25, grew, welcoming several multi-sport athletes. The team, led by Head Coach Griffin Gagnon, sent two relay teams to Penn Relays – a 4x100 team consisting of DeCain, Willard Freeman ’28, Alex Henderson ’26, and Zayden Woods ’28; and a 4x400 team consisting of DeCain, Jermaine Drakes ’25, Freeman, and Njuguna Ngugi ’26. At the IAC Championships, the Varsity A team finished fifth and the Varsity B squad finished second. The highlight of the IAC Championship was Matteis’ repeat performance to become IAC Champion of both shotput and discus, earning him All-IAC honors.
Rugby
After winning the consolidated Metro Area Varsity Rugby Conference (MAVRC) Championship and graduating several seniors, the team had a smaller roster and started the year with many novice players. Add to that an unusually high number of illnesses and injuries – with between 3-12 starters out at any given time - and it was obvious that the team would be in a different position than it had been in the past few seasons. The ruggers, led by Head Coach Sam Tyler and captains Marshall Hyman ’25, Quinn MacIntyre ’25, and Jonathan Willis ’25, did not give up, facing the adversity head-on and pulling some wins together. Although the season ended at .500, with a final record of 3-3, the highlight of the season was the team effort to beat Alexandria City High School and secure a spot in the playoffs. Sam Acosta ’25, Peter Deskovich ’25, and Willis were named All-MAVRC, and Hyman, Bahesh Kurbanov ’25, and Simon Schwartz ’25 earned Honorable Mention.
Tennis
St. Albans has been a thorn in the side of Head Coach WT Miller ’86 and his varsity tennis squad for the past few years – the Bulldogs have been the only team in the IAC to beat the Bears, often sweeping them in both the regular season and the tournament. And going into this season’s IAC tournament, it looked like history might repeat itself once again. But at St. Albans, the Bears, led by captains Brad Bondi ’25 and Jeh-Lei Fan ’25, were able to win the championship in a match that included two tiebreakers. This year’s win represents Landon’s 51st tennis IAC championship in program history, with Bondi, Fan, and Frank Wang ’26 earning All-IAC!
