This blog post is written by Upper School Counselor Richard Curtis, who recently led a free, six-week class on parenting for members of our community. Curtis explains why “Active Parenting of Teens” was an opportunity for parents to learn from and share with each other what works for them and what doesn’t during the teenage years.
At Landon, the college search is guided by fit. Our 30-to-1 student-to-counselor ratio is far lower than most private and public schools, so our boys receive plenty of personal attention and guidance as they weigh this important decision. Under the leadership of Co-Directors of College Counseling Deborah Basket (previously a high-level admissions director at the College of William & Mary) and Andy Luther, we begin the process in Grade 9 to advise you on course selection.
By Grade 11, you are matched with a counselor who works with you and your family one-on-one. In Grade 12, our students craft their lists very carefully and strategically, and that explains why so many of our seniors attend one of their top schools.
We want our boys to find a place that will allow them to continue to challenge themselves academically, explore their interests and passions, and prepare them for careers and life beyond college.
- Our 80 seniors in the Class of 2019 headed to 59 different schools in the fall.
- 97 percent applied Early Decision or Early Action.
- 75 percent attended a college or university to which they applied early.
